Description | Sale of cattle in Ireland by Sheriff |
Details |
Land League agitation in Ireland. A sheriff sells cattle to raise the rent that the previous owner of the cattle was unable to pay. Auctioneers were often unwilling to supervise such sales, and thus the sheriffs were left to do the job, against a background of a protesting crowd. Armed dragoons are on hand (to the right) to intervene if the crowd becomes violent.
