Duke Charles Edward of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, with the Duchess (Victoria Adelaide) and their family, from left: Prince John Leopold; Prince Hubert; Princess Caroline; Princess Sybil. The grandson of Queen Victoria, and son of the Duke of Albany, Charles Edward faced a conflict of national loyalty as war broke out months after this photograph was taken. Holding a commission in the German army, he chose to support Germany rather than the country of his birth.
