Description | Scalpeen of Tim Downs at Dunmore, Ireland 1849 |
Details |
This is the makeshift dwelling or shelter of Tim Downs at Dunmore in Ireland. The destitute and homeless were lucky to be able to live in one of these hovels. Such miserable conditions were brought on by the potato famine in the mid 19th century and further compounded by the forced evictions of poverty-stricken peasants from their homes and farms.
