The under-seas tomb of over a hundred men. The scene of the great mine disaster at Whitehaven: Wellington Pit, which extends five miles under the Irish Sea. An explosion and fire in the Wellington Colliery on 11th May 1910 caused the deaths of 136 men and boys who were trapped by smoke and fire. Out of the 142 at work in the mine at the time, only six escaped.
