Date 1843
Description School of Design
Details

The Government School of Design, at Somerset House, London. Concerned that though the textile produced in Britain was considered superior to other nations, the designs fell behind other states such as France and Germany, a House of Commons committee was formed to address the issue. The result was the establishment of a School of Design, based at Somerset House in the rooms recently vacated by the Royal Academy.
