Novelist Sheila Kaye-Smith marrying the Rev. Theodore Penrose Fry, curate of Christ Church, St. Leonards, and eldest son of Sir John and Lady Fray, at St. Paul's, St. Leonards in October 1924. The couple later converted to Catholicism and built a Catholic chapel in Northiam in Sussex. Kaye-Smith, whose novels dealt with rural subjects, was born in St. Leonards and spent most of her life in the county of Sussex.
