Description | Shell Motor Spirit advertisement |
Details |
Advertisement for Shell Motor Spirit endorsed by Captain R. F. Scott R.N. who chooses Shell, 'to supply power for his motor sledges, with which he hopes to reach the South Pole' in his ill-fated 1911 Antarctic Expedition where he and his comrades failed in their attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole, and perished on the return journey. The advert has a particular poignancy; the failure and breakdown of Scott's motor sledges was one of the contributing factors in the expedition's failure.
