On the rifle ranges of Bisley and elsewhere, a shot which misses the target is signalled by the waving of a flag to and fro above the trench, in which the market sits. With 'characteristic humour', British soldiers at the Front adopt the same means (with a shovel substituted for a flag) to notify the enemy of his errors in marksmanship. Illustration by Alfred Leete, better known as the artist behind the famous, Kitchener, 'Your Country Needs You' London Opinion cover and subsequent poster.
