Description | Sinking of H.M.S. Hampshire |
Details |
H.M.S. Hampshire sinks in heavy seas just off the Orkneys, having most likely struck a mine laid by a German submarine before the Battle of Jutland. The Hampshire was carrying Lord Kitchener, Secretary of State for War, and his staff, to Russia. They were all lost, along with all but 12 of the crew, who managed to reach shore on two Carley floats.
