Photograph of aircraft carrier HMS Courageous as it sinks, having been torpedoed by a German submarine, 17 September 1939. The Sphere describes how the ship sank so rapidly that the men were forced to jump overboard, although hundreds were rescued by a destroyer and another vessel.
