Description Sir Edwin Lutyens
Details

Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens (1869-1944), architect and renowned creator of the government buildings at Delhi and the Cenotaph among other notable structures. Pictured in his Mansfield Street offices during the Second World War when he was responsible for designing the reconstruction of the capital. He is posed beside a model segment for his design for the Metropolitan Cathedral of Liverpool, intended to be a massive Romanesque masterpiece, but only the crypt was completed, the ambitious building considered too expensive in post-war Britain. The crypt forms part of the overall modern structure designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd, completed in 1967.
