Description | Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by William McLaren |
Details |
Sir Gawain takes up the challenge. As instructed by the Green Knight, he swings the battleaxe and cuts off the Green Knight's head. The head falls off and rolls towards the banqueting guests. The headless Green Knight steps forward, bleeding profusely, picks up his head by the hair, and rides off. Before he goes he invites Sir Gawain to visit him in a year's time, on next New Year's Day, and he will receive a return blow.
