Sir Henri Deterding (1866 - 1939), oil magante and formerly managing director of the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company. Deterding was born in Amsterdam in 1866, and began his career as a bank clerk. In 1896 he joined the Royal Dutch Oil Company, and by 1900 he was the general manager. He performed great services to the Allied forces during world war one and was awarded an honourary K.B.F, having 'floated the Allies to victory on a sea of oil', according to a remark attributed to the late Lord Curzon.
