Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841 - 1904) (centre) and his retinue of local porters and hunters, marching across Africa in search of Dr. David Livingstone, 1871. Stanley, a British-American explorer and journalist, had been sent by the proprietor of the New York Herald, James Gordon Bennett, to 'find' Livingstone, the Scottish missionary and explorer, who had not been heard from for several years.
