Casual wards were attached to workhouses, where the destitute could spend the night either for a fee or for their labour the next morning. Here are sketches from one such casual ward: 1) men waiting for admission in the large sketch, 2) washing in the the bath room, 3) the sleeping cells, 4) the disinfecting room and 5) stone-breaking the following morning.
