Description | Sketches at the Royal Tournament |
Details |
Leaves from an artist's sketch book - impressions of some of the figures and incidents at the Royal tournament by Fortunino Matania. The first 'vignette' shows the quarterstaff display between Robin Hood and Little John (a humorous interlude). On the right is one of the 1st Life Guards in the musical double ride and below him one of 'O' Battery (the Rocket Troop) of the Royal Horse Artillery who perform their difficult Musical Drive with whirling guns. The centre figure is that of Britannia, before whom the Royal Navy, past and present - passes in review at the end of the pageant. Finally, a vignette of the rapier and dagger display.
