Wonderful Woman~~~~Caption: She used to scream at the sight of a mouse; now she faces shell-fire with a smile.~~~~This wonderfully positive tribute by Edmund Blampied admires women's courageous progress in the face of war, from frailty to bravery. The woman who joined VADs or the ready-trained units, such as the Queen Alexandra Imperial Nursing Corps sent to France, were predominantly from middle- or upper class backgrounds. Most had led sheltered lives in comfortable surroundings and would have been quite unprepared for what they were about to face.
