Description | Society ladies in The Great Love - patriotic war film, WW1 |
Details |
A double page spread from The Sketch magazine showing four scenes from the patriotic war film, The Great Love. Directed by D. W. Griffith and released in 1918, the leading roles were played by Lilian Gish and Robert Harron but there was a supporting cast of society ladies, who through the film demonstrated how British women of rank and fashion had abandoned their previous social pursuits and devoted themselves to all kinds of war-work. They included some of the most prominent and well-known figures in society - Bettine (Bettina) Stuart-Wortley, the ubiquitous Lady Diana Manners, Hazel, Lady Lavery, Miss Elizabeth Asquith, Mrs E. S. Montagu (formerly Venetia Stanley) and Kathleen, Lady Drogheda. The film is now presumed lost.
