Socrates (470-399 BC) - classical Greek (Athenian) philosopher - depicted here accepting the hemlock, knowing it will be his last drink. Socrates had been found guilty of both corrupting the minds of the youth of Athens and of impiety ("not believing in the gods of the state"), and was subsequently sentenced to death by drinking a mixture containing the poison hemlock.
