Picture No 10731436
Date 1914
Description Soldiers guard Tilbury Docks at the outbreak of WWI
Details

Once Germany had declared war on Russia, war with France was certain to follow, with the possibility that Great Britain could be forced into the conflict too. The British government therefore took every precaution in view of possible eventualities: here, the Territorials guard Tilbury Docks, setting the regular army free for other duties.
