Details |
Photograph of the Cunard Liner 'Berengaria' heading out of Southampton, with tugs, to head to Jarrow to be broken up, December 1938. 'Berengaria' was built at the AG Vulcan shipyard, Hamburg, in 1913 and launched as 'Imperator' for the Hamburg-Amerika Line. She was laid up, unused, during the First World War then given to Britain as war reparations at the ceasation of violence. Cunard bought her shortly thereafter and used her on the Southampton, Cherbourg, New York route from 1921 until 1938. Unfortunately she lost her Passenger Certificate in 1938 due to the senility of her electrical wiring and was taken to Jarrow to be broken up in the same year.
