Description | SS 'Sampo', 1898. |
Details |
Photograph of Steamship 'Sampo' a newly constructed ice-breaker, built by Armstrong, Whitworth and Co. for the Senate of Finland, 1898. This vessel was novel, in being one of the first ice-breakers to have a propeller at the bow to help break through ice. The bow propellor disturbed the water supporting the ice, which made the ice less resistant to the ice-breaker's bow. She was intended to work at the port of Hango, keeping the port open through the winter months.
