Description | Start of Major Wood's Unlucky Flight - Receiving a blessing |
Details |
Major J C P Wood and Captain C C Wyllie met with misfortune during their preliminary flight from Eastchurch to Limerick, whence they intended to cross the Atlantic from west to east. The engine stopped, due to an air-lock in the fuel pipe twelve miles out over the Irish Sea. The turned and descended to Church Bay, Anglesey where the pilots were rescued and the aircraft later salvaged (as shown in this photograph). In the background can be seen the third HMS Windsor (D42), a W-class destroyer of the British Royal Navy that saw service in the final months of World War I and in World War II.
