Picture No 11939047
Date 1899
Description Stratford-upon-Avon, Mop Fair 1899
Details

'Dancing the Hay', English morris dancers in traditional clothing at Stratford-upon-Avon, Mop Fair. Most probable derivation of the word 'hay' is from the French haie, a hedge, the dancers standing in two rows, being linked to hedges. But the hay was danced in a circle as well as a line.
