Description Stukeley - Cascade at Wilton House, Wiltshire
Details

A Cascade decorated with a statue of Pegasus at Wilton House, Wilton, Salisbury, Wiltshire, the seat of the Earl of Pembroke. An engraving by William Stukeley from 'Itinerarium Curiosum: or, An Account of the Antiquitys and Remarkable Curiositys in Nature or Art, Observ'd in Travels thro' Great Britain', 1724. Stukeley (1687 - 1765) was a physician and later clergyman and one of the co-founders of the Society of Antiquities. Itinerarium Curiosum was the first of his books regarding his antiquarian tours and shows an England before the changes brought on by enclosing the commons. Many records of these ancient monuments have never been surpassed in quality or detail and many are the only reference we have to monuments now sadly vanished.
