Description | Suggestion by The Sphere for a monument to Scott |
Details |
Design reproduced in The Tatler, suggested by the Sphere's special artist, Fortunino Matania for a memorial to the late Captain Scott and his companions, who died attempting to reach the South Pole in 1912. The Tatler gives a very positive critique of the suggested design, but suggests that Britannia could look a little more grief-stricken, that a simple Doric style would suit the gravity of such a memorial and that, the penguins, dotted along the balustrade of the monument's base could perhaps be ommitted!!!
