Daughter of the Hon. Guy Charteris and a cousin of the Earl of Wemyss and March, the Countess of Dudley married the third Earl in 1943. She was a keen horsewoman and took part in many important show jumping events. During the war she worked in the V.A.D. and later took part in the running of the Earl's Staffordshire estate at Himley Hall.
