Group of engineers testing the recovered 1865 Atlantic cable. The first attempt at laying a transatlantic cable had been in 1858. In 1865, Brunel's 'Great Eastern' set out on a second attempt to but the expedition had to be called off due to bad weather. A year later, the first successful laying of a transatlantic cable between Foilhummerum Bay, Ireland to Heart's Content, Newfoundland also recovered the abandoned 1865 cable.
