Details

The Abercarne Colliery, Monmouthshire, where 268 men and boy's died in the worst recorded colliery disaster in Gwent. Due to the raging fires, rescue attempts were halted and the decision was made to flood the mines. It took 35 millions gallons and two months for the fires to be satisfactorily extinguished.
