Archduke Charles Francis Joseph, heir-presumptive to the Austro Hungarian Crown, following the assassination of his uncle Franz Ferdinand. On a visit to Sarajevo on June 28th, 1914, the Archduke and his wife were shot by a group of young Serbian nationalists led by Gavrilo Princip. Austria used the incident as a pretext for attacking Serbia, which precipitated the First World War.
