The Transvaal War: the Battle of Majuba Hill. Majuba Hill was the main battle of the First Boer War, and one which the British resoundingly lost. The officer to the left with binoculars is General Sir George Colley, commanding officer, who was killed by Boer marksmen; to facilitate his ascent of the hill (says the ILN), he took off his boots and during the fighting wore only socks and slippers; the officer in the foreground to whom the doctor is offering a flask is Major L C Singleton of the 92nd Gordon Highlanders who died of his wounds. The figure on the extreme left is J A Cameron, Special Correspondent of the Standard.
