A sketch taken from the musical The Better Ole by Bystander cartoonist Captain Bruce Bairnsfather, staged at the Oxford Theatre (formerly the Oxford Musical Hall) in London in 1917 where it ran for 811 performances. It brought to life Bairnsfather's character Old Bill, a grumpy, walrus-moustached soldier along with a cast of other British 'types'.
