Picture No 10216603
Date 1849
Description The Bishop Rock Lighthouse, Scilly Isles 1849
Details

Engraving of the first Bishop Rock lighthouse, which was built in 1847 and destroyed by storms on 5th February 1850. The design, by Walker and Burges, was intended to allow high seas to pass through the lighthouse supports unimpeded. Unfortunately, the cast iron columns and wrought iron supports weren't strong enough.
