Description | The Burnden Park Disaster, 1946 |
Details |
Photograph showing Burnden Park Football Ground in Bolton (top image) and some of the victims of a disaster which took place there during an F.A. Cup Match in March, 1946. As the match between Bolton Wanderers and Stoke City got underway, 65,000 fans were in Burnden Park and around 15,000 were locked out. A large number of the 15,000 decided to rush the ground and succeeded in gaining access to the terraces. Unfortunately, this meant that 33 people were either crushed or tramped to death as many steel crush-barriers broke and the crowd had to surge onto the football field.
