Description The Central Court of the Monastery at Monte Cassino
Details

The central court hill-top Benedictine Monastery at Monte Cassino, Italy, prior to its destruction in the Second World War. This was one of three fine courts in the monastery connected by arcades and steps. Between January and May 1944 the monastery was completely destroyed as the Allied army attempted to push the occupying Nazi troops out of this strong defensive position.
