The Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaklava. A huge tactical blunder lead to the slaughter of hundreds of British cavalry men. Less than two hundred of the 673 men who rode into the 'valley of death' returned, most of them injured. The Charge of the Light Brigade was immortalised in a poem by Tennyson and was regarded by the Victorians as an example of superhuman heroism on the battlefield.
