The 14th Ferozepur Sikhs, with Lieutenant Cheyne, Captain C. R. Ross, Major Sawyer and Captain Gordon. A detachment of the regiment, led by Captain Ross (son of General Ross who raised the regiment in 1857), were travelling from Gilgit to Chitral in modern-day Pakistan when they were attacked by tribesmen (outnumbering them by ten times), and fifty of them were killed by rocks hurled at them.
