Workers waiting for breakfast in Mr Chapman's courtyard in Mottram, near Manchester, during the Lancashire cotton famine. WIth the supply of cotton from the United States disrupted by the Civil War there, many mills were forced to close, leading to loss of income for many workers and subsequently no money to purchase food.
