Page from the Illustrated London News illustrating the work of the British War Dog School at Shoeburyness on the Essex coast in training dogs to become messengers at the front during the First World War. The school, which later moved to the New Forest in the latter stages of the war, was established by Major Edwin Richardson, the renowned dog trainer.
