Hugh Cecil Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale (1857 - 1944), English nobleman. The second son of the 3rd Earl of Lonsdale, he succeeded his brother, the 4th Earl, in 1882. Lord Lonsdale was an avid sportsman and bon vivant and was known by some as 'England's greatest sporting gentleman'. He was a founding member of the National Sporting Club and he donated the original Lonsdale Belts for boxing. His name was also given to a clothing brand of boxing garments, worn by Muhammad Ali. Pictured here with cigar in mouth at Olympia, where he went, in character of President of Bertram Mills's Circus to view the opening performance and, as usual, present bouquets to the lady members of the company.
