Panorama of the Federal Army lines and Tennessee River at Chatanooga, viewed from the lower ridge of Lookout Mountain, 1863. In December 1863 the Federal and Confederate armies attacked each other above Chatanooga, each side losing roughly a third of its men. There was no ground gained on either side.
