Before marrying Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich of Russia in 1884, the Grand Duchess Sergius was Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Louise Alice of Hesse (1864 - 1918), the second daughter of the late Grand Duke of Hesse and of Princess Alice. She became known in Russian society for her beauty, charm and her charity to the poor.
