The Great Eastern under the hammer. After a thirty year career, the great steamship was scrapped, with her hull and fittings being sold at auction at New Ferry, Liverpool. 1. The smith's shop on board the ship, a relic of her the Atlantic Cable laying days in 1866. 2. Auctioneering under difficulties: the auctioneer at sea during a storm. 3. Cigars distributed at the end of the day's sale. 4. Bidders going on board during a gale.
