Description | The Irish potato famine 1849 |
Details |
A young girl and boy dig for potatoes while a tired child looks on. These fields have already been harvested so the children are gleaning any chance leftovers. The occupation of 'gleaning' was common for those who were not given shelter in a poorhouse or a workhouse but were left to fend for themselves. This occupation illustrates the destitution and hunger that was common in Ireland during the middle of the 19th century.
