Description The ladder to civilisation, WW1 cartoon following use of gas
Details

Cartoon from Puck reproduced in The Tatler showing a symbolic ladder to civilisation with each rung representing a development in weaponry. The bottom rung shows a caveman's club, while as they climber progresses, he passes cross bows, pistols, rifles, shells, torpedoes and eventually, at the top, the most inhumane, chlorine gas. The cartoon comments on the widespread condemnation of the use of gas by the Germans at the 2nd Battle of Ypres on 22 April 1915.
