The library at Louvain in Belgium, as it was with a smaller, inset photograph, showing how it looked after German bombardment In 1914. The destruction of the 15th century library, which contained up to 300,000 books and manuscripts, including many rarities, was viewed as a wanton act of barbarism by the invading German forces.
