Date 1848
Description The 'Ocean Monarch' Disaster, Irish Sea, 1848.
Details

Engraving showing the emigrant ship, 'Ocean Monarch' (left), on fire in the Irish Sea, 24th August 1848. A fire was discovered on board soon after the 'Ocean Monarch', with 396 passengers, set sail from Liverpool. The fire was uncontrollable and a number of small steamers and pleasure boats had to come to the aid of the passengers. One of the vessels which offered help was the 'Affonzo', on which the Prince de Joinville was a passenger. This engraving was made by Morel Fatio, from one of the Prince's sketches. The 'Affonzo' managed to rescue 160 people, with the help of Frederick Jerome who courageously swam to the 'Ocean Monarch' and ran a line between it and the 'Affonzo'.
