These four images were taken in sequence from Sunday morning to Monday afternoon and show the atmospheric pollution caused by the factories in Sheffield. The first photograph, top left, was taken on Sunday, September 19th 1920 at 11 a.m. when the factories would not have been open, and shows clear skies. The photograph top right was taken Monday, September 20th at 8 a.m. while the bottom left photograph was taken at noon on the same day. The final photograph, bottom left, was taken on Monday September 20th, 1920 at 4.45 p.m. and shows the smoky fog that descends onto the city from burning crude coal.
