Description | The perils of kite-balloon work 1916 |
Details |
An army observation officer suspended in a basket beneath his kite-balloon (a gas-filled balloon tethered to the ground) is depicted struggling with his open parachute, caught in a strong wind. The incident, a 'very exceptional sort of accident,' is said to have occurred over British lines when the man's parachute opened by mistake and, taken by a gust of wind, nearly tipped the unfortunate officer out of the basket.
