Description | The poor helping the poor, Trafalgar Square, London |
Details |
Trafalgar Square, London, at 1 am in the morning when the coster mongers of Whitecross Street, distributed food to starving people who had gathered in the Square. Previously these kind men, barely able to make a living themselves, had collected amongst themselves the sum of three pounds which they then spent on sixty gallons of tea and coffee and several hundred rations of bread and cheese, which they distributed in the Square. This act of charity and generosity was further enhanced by the kindly and unostentious way in which it was performed.
